Sometimes we just have to accept the things that we are incapable of.
Well, in this instance, I have come to the conclusion that as of right now I can NOT silk screen. I mean I tried and I tried and it just didn’t look as good as I want it to. I guess I just want it to be perfect. It’s sad :( I really really wanted to try to move into that direction but it’s just not going to happen. Maybe one day when I have the space, I will venture into this again.

I will be doing a little updating in my shop today. You will find some newly designed blank notebooks. I hope to be adding more this coming weekend also. Here’s a little peek.

Like I said a few posts ago, that I was trying to learn how to silkscreen, I finally got all of my materials in order and I’m about ready to go. Before venturing into the photo emulsion process I figured the best way to start was to begin with the drawing fluid and screen filler process.

I guess I’ll try to take some photos as I go but it may be too hard. I’ve never done this before so we’ll see :) it might just be a real mess.

There are a handful of things that I love to make and create and I go through my phases. Well, this weekend was bookbinding. I put together a few hardbound books. It makes it easier when you work in steps, and in batches. There’s the cutting and folding step, the gluing and assembling step, the drying and waiting step, and then the photo taking step (my favorite). You have everything that you just made, after hours of labor, all together. Nice and pretty.

I will be adding these sometime this weekend or upcoming week to the shop.

Hello. It’s been a while and a bit crazy here, sometimes everything just happens all at once. So here’s what I’ve been up to.
I’ve been updating the site Basso56, it’s an italian restaurant here in NYC. My friend, Greg, and I created the website about a year ago and we have to update it once in a while with new pricing, reviews, images, etc.
I’ve also been updating the site for Butch Hogan, he’s a photographer, also here in NYC. I created the website about 2 years ago and I have to constantly update it because it’s his portfolio. He’s always working on something new and his website should show for it. Butch Hogan’s a busy guy.
I’ve had to work at my “real” job since last Monday, that’s eight days straight, only because we had inventory on Sunday, so I had to prep everything for it before hand. Can you believe it? Anyways, it did suck, but it’s over now. I finally get a few days off…to do some real (and fun of course) work.

I got to make some new notecards to be sold alone or as a set with their matching notebooks. How cool is that? It’s really cute. I wish you can tell from my pictures (but you can’t) and see how crisp these prints are. I love my printer. The colors are so vibrant and the line edges are so perfect. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to take better pictures. Well, this one is in my shop. I will be adding more tomorrow. Have a great night!!

I’ve spent the entire day, the moment I woke up (actually after my morning cup of coffee) assembling my new notebooks. From cutting, to folding, to binding, all the way to packaging.
I am extremely happy with the way they turned out. Very cute indeed!! I also took some in between shots while they were in production. So…before the real madness began…my work desk.
The covers are all of my design. Two were originally from photos that I had taken a while back. They were just sitting on my hard drive…It’s about time I put them to good use. The other one was originally from a children’s book that I wrote and illustrated for myself. Maybe one day I’ll share it with others, but for now this one image will be used for these cute little notebooks.

These new blank notebooks and some other new goodies will go up for sale in my shop this coming week.

I’ve been bad. I haven’t been doing my friday doodles. I do have excuses though. Last week I was busy because of the show and today I left the house early to go to the museum with my friend, Despina. So even though I didn’t get much actual work done, I did spend the day trying to find, decide and research what steps to take next…and to hang out with my friend of course.
I’ve been toying with the idea of designing my own patterns for the book covers of my hand bound books. So instead of buying fancy paper or just plain paper, I can create my own. I’ll work more on it this weekend and see how it turns out.
I’ll leave you with this for now…

An untitled watercolor on paper I did a while ago.

After my chinese style landscape painting I decided to do another drawing in ink. I scanned it and tried to digitally color it. Here’s my result:

It looks very clean and finished. I just added it to my shop. I printed it on Legion Digital Rag paper (a very smooth and heavy fine art paper). The entire print size is 8.5 x 11, and the actual image size is 5 x 7 with a white border around it for framing.

I haven’t truely painted in a really really long time. Almost about two years now. I’ve done ink drawings and washes but that’s not painting. I haven’t squeezed paint out of a tube in a while. It was scary at first. I created a drawing and was like, now what? I never really know where it will end up. Hopefully, in a good place where I can smile and laugh at myself and be proud of what I just created.

Anyways, this painting was created using gouache and watercolors. I first painted it on smooth white bristol paper, but the white of the paper made it seem too stark, so I scanned the entire painting and layed it on a scanned image of kraft paper. It just gave it a little something, more texture and color. It sort of looks like chinese silk embroidery.

So it’s friday. An actual day of FUN work.
No more crazy demanding customers. I don’t think I’ve every said what I do. I work in an art store, it’s nationwide. It’s usually great fun being around art supplies and fellow artist employees. But, I have been doing this for a long time now, it’s been nine years, maybe even ten. Oh god. You would think that most artists would be cool and easy going, well that is NOT true. I don’t know if it’s their age (generally middle aged) or from living in New York. But they are CRAZY, MEAN and DEMANDING. (ok not ALL) Yesterday for example, I won’t mention any names, but this teacher from Parsons, formerly a teacher at Pratt (I heard she got fired, I wonder why?) needed an 18×24 box but I was only able to find a 20×24 box and told her that I would empty it out and she could have it. She looked at me like I was crazy and then she flipped. She yelled at me, “That box is TOO big, how am I suppose to use it? This is rediculous, I came all this way.” I told her that it was not that much bigger. Then she walked away from me. I continued with what I was doing and 15 minutes later I saw her walking out with that same box I showed her. Anyways, you had to be there. I always wonder, how do people go through life like that? It’s so sad.

I thought about my little doodles and what I can do with them. There are just so many possibilities but this time I’ll make little notecards again just to see if anyone will like it. I always get scared when I create something new and put it out there for the world to see. Anyways here is what I did, I created an illustration in ink. I scanned it and added some color. They turned out to be really really clean and cute. The little chinese girl just makes me laugh everytime I look at her. I think I’ll name her Sum Yee, after my little sister, Jenelle (well, her chinese name). She sort of looked like that when she was little. Small, cute and round, no offense Jenelle. These notecards will be up in my etsy shop late in the day tomorrow.
Since I always make little things, I will create something bigger next time, I will make a promise with myself and really really try.

Here’s a little doodle I made today. They just crack me up, so fat and cute. I’m still not sure of how or when I will be using them.
I also created business cards using the design of my blog banner. I was hesitant at first, when am I going to use these? Well, there they are. I now have cards. I’ll find some way to use ‘em up…maybe I’ll stuff one in a goodie package for an etsy buyer.
