behind the wheel

Saturday, July 5, 2008

For the last 5 years I haven’t really sat behind the wheel to drive somewhere, especially through crazy traffic in Manhattan. I get real nervous now, I don’t know why but before that I use to drive like a maniac and didn’t care because it was just what I had to do to get around. But then after you get use to a way of life (like someone else driving you around aka a boyfriend) you tend to forget or loose nerve because your mind plays games with you, well, mine did.

So yesterday I gave myself a pep talk and drove all the way to New Jersey to see my friends and it felt great. I didn’t think about it and just did it. I also took some pictures while in the car driving through Times Square right after the fire works. Don’t ask why I drove down that street but I ended up there. Stupid I know. But it was all ok because I got home in one piece.

You are so right! If you don’t consciously keep expanding your comfort zone, it shrinks when you are not looking. I expanded mine this year, by forcing myself to drive on the right here in France (when I normally drive on the left in the UK) it felt enormously challenging a few months ago, but now it feels ok and I am happily scooting around the french countryside.

That must have been so scary at first driving on the right. We can’t be scardy cats because if we are? How are we suppose to live life, right? We just have to stop thinking so much sometimes and just do it! (I just have to remind myself of that everyday from now on.)

There you go! You got it right now, be strong and just do it! In general being scared can hinder you from doing something so don’t allow it too. However, there are also times when being scared may be justified. Wow, I’m really proud that you’ve found you way thru. (I’ve read your post a week earlier.)
